Substitutions & Variations
- This recipe works perfectly with both wheat flour and all-purpose flour.
- For a Gluten-free version, simply swap the all purpose flour for Gluten-free pancake mix or a gluten-free flour blend specifically designed for baking. You may also use Almond flour. Note that the texture may be slightly different.
- Use honey, granulated sugar or even maple syrup as a substitute for brown sugar.
- Want to keep things light? Feel free to swap the full-fat milk for low-fat or 2% milk. The texture will be a bit more dense (but still fluffy and satisfying).
- Substitute the vegetable oil with an equal amount of melted butter or coconut oil. Know that Coconut oil will solidify when cold and give a coconut flavor to this cake as well. You may also use ¾ cup applesauce for every 1 cup oil. Though it may affect the texture slightly.
- For chocolate richness, fold in 1-2 tablespoons of chocolate chips to the batter. Sprinkle a few chips on top for decoration and also to add chocolatey finish before microwaving.
- A decadent cream cheese frosting will further enhance the flavor. Simply beat 4 tablespoons of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of softened cream cheese until smooth and dreamy. Drizzle this luscious amazingly tangy and sweet topping over your warm mug cake for an extra layer of richness.

How to Make Cinnamon Roll Mug Cake
Detailed Instructions Below! See the key steps here, then head to the recipe card below for full instructions.
1. Whisk the dry ingredients and add it to the microwave safe mug.
2. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
3. Whisk the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients using a whisk until combined.
4. Clean the edges of the mug and sprinkle the cinnamon mixture on the top of the batter. Place it in the microwave and cook for 60 - 90 seconds. Insert a tooth pick in the center of the cake, if it comes out clean the cinnamon mug cake is ready.
Expert Tips
- Microwave Safe Mug helps the mug to not crack due to the high temperatures of the microwave.
- Use a large mug (I prefer 14 oz mugs). It gives your mug cake enough space to rise beautifully and prevents the batter to overflow in the microwave.
- Cook in 30-Second Intervals is the key to perfectly cook this cake. Once the mug is in the microwave, cook it in 30-second bursts. Know that each microwave operates differently. So, it is important to keep an eye on things after each interval. Mine was ready in around 90 seconds, but yours might take a little longer or shorter.
- Weigh Ingredients for the most consistent and delicious results. Ditching the measuring cups and using a digital scale ensures optimal accuracy, unlike cup measurements which can vary and affect the texture and outcome of your mug cake.
- Ditch the mug, go for the bowl to make this cake. A ceramic bowl or ramekin will help with consistent baking and a visually stunning treat.
Recipe FAQs
This recipe can also be baked in the oven or an air fryer. Preheat your oven to 350°F and bake for 13-15 minutes, or preheat your air fryer to 350°F and bake for 8-9 minutes. I haven't had the chance to test these methods yet, but based on other mug cakes, it should work fine. Let me know how it turns out in comments in case you are trying any of these methods.
For a dairy-free twist, use soy milk or any other nut milk you love, like almond or cashew milk. Keep in mind, the texture might vary slightly compared to regular milk. Also, go for unsweetened plant-based milk to avoid an overly sweet cake. You may adjust the sugar amount slightly (if needed).
Substituting coconut flour for regular flour in this recipe is definitely possible, but remember coconut flour absorbs a lot of liquid due to its high fibre content during baking. You'll likely need to use less coconut flour and add more milk in this recipe. Be sure to adjust the cooking time too. If you try it, please share your experience and any tips in the comments. Would love to know about it.
How to Store
Refrigerator
If you somehow manage to have leftover mug cake (impressive!), no worries. Wrap that mug tight with a plastic cling, and store it in the fridge for a day. Just know that the texture might not be quite the same (but still yummy).
Reheating
Pull your cinnamon mug cake out of the fridge a few hours before you want to eat or serve. Reheat for 30-60 seconds in the microwave for a warm and gooey goodness.
